Faith Over Fear: Learning How to Put On the Full Armor of God

Understanding Ephesians 6:13-17

I’ve never been someone who runs toward conflict. If anything, I avoid it. I’d rather create distance than confront disagreement head-on. I value peace and the comfort of knowing no one is upset with me. Even small misunderstandings with friends or family left me feeling depleted and sad.

One day, while reading my Bible, I came across Ephesians 6:13–17.

“For this reason take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with trust like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit — which is the word of God.”

In this passage, Paul describes the armor of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. It’s a call to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy.

I remember feeling conflicted when I read it. The language of armor and battle felt intense. I don’t like fighting. I prefer harmony. When we encounter worldly problems, it is important to put on the armor of God and defend against the evil of this world. We need to remember that some conflicts aren’t about being right, they’re about standing firm in truth, faith, and righteousness when the world feels chaotic or hostile.

Part 1: The Belt of Truth

The belt is the foundation of our holy armor. Without it, everything would fall apart. Truth is the base of our relationship with God and is essential when defending ourselves against the evil in the world.

Deceit is the devil’s favorite weapon. He twists the truth and makes it difficult to tell what is right from what is wrong. In our world today, there are so many lies and so many conflicting opinions that it is crucial to put on the belt of truth every day. Truth keeps our eyes fixed on what truly matters and helps us recognize God’s voice above all the other noise.

In our daily lives, we can put on the belt of truth by spending time in God’s Word. Reading what God has revealed to us is the best way to stay grounded in what is true. We can also ask Him for discernment when we come to Him in prayer. When we do this, His truth will rise above every lie.

Part 2: The Shield of Faith

The devil tries to derail our faith in so many ways. He can use situations with other people — or even our own weaknesses — to tempt us to turn away from God and toward sin. He wants us to give in, to feel discouraged, and to believe we are alone. But that is not what God desires for us.

God has given us the shield of faith so we can stand firm against the temptations and lies meant to pull us away from Him. To truly pick up that shield, we must first acknowledge that we need His help. When we pray and keep our eyes fixed on the Lord, He uses our trials not to break us, but to strengthen and refine our faith.

Part 3: The Helmet of Salvation

Finally, the helmet of salvation guards our minds against the thoughts and lies that try to pull us away from God. Worries, anxieties, doubts, and fears can grow louder when we let them, and the enemy can use them to shake our confidence and our peace. That’s why it’s so important to stay rooted in God’s Word and continually remind ourselves of the good news Jesus has given us.

When we fill our minds with truth, we strengthen our defense. We remember that we are deeply loved, fully known, and never abandoned. Nothing can separate us from His love. We were created in God’s image, and through Christ we are made whole and restored.

When anxious or discouraging thoughts try to take hold, we can call on Him. He is faithful to renew our minds, calm our hearts, and refocus our perspective. With the helmet of salvation firmly in place, we can stand confident, protected, and anchored in His truth.
