Understanding Hannah's Story

Although Hannah is not a very prominent figure in the bible, her story and commitment to the Lord is a powerful reminder of the importance of prayer and worship. She demonstrates how we can have faith in God not only in seasons of sorrow and hopelessness, but also through overwhelming joy. 

In 1 Samuel 1, we are introduced to Hannah who is unable to have children, but deeply longs for a son. Everyday, she cries out to God, asking Him for a baby. She bows in worship and pours her heart out in prayer, surrendering her deepest desire into His hands. She pleads with the Lord and begs for Him not to forget her. 1 Samuel 1:10 states:

“Deeply hurt, Hannah prayed to the Lord and wept many tears."

Later, in 1 Samuel 1:16, Hannah explains:

"...I've been praying from the depth of my anguish and resentment."

These verses demonstrate three key aspects of meaningful prayer.

First, Hannah’s prayers are not obligatory or superficial, but they are honest and deeply personal. When we pray, we do not need to worry about the perfect words or phrases–God simply wants to hear from us.

Furthermore, prayer is the first thing that Hannah turns to in the depths of her despair. God is the only one who can give us peace in the midst of chaos or gladness in the midst of sorrow. With this in mind, we can go directly to Him when we feel lost and He will be there.

Finally, in the midst of her suffering, Hannah allows for her sadness to pull her closer to the Lord, rather than drive Him away. In the same way, through all our human struggles, we are called to bring our burdens to God first and believe in His power, His timing, and His plan. By doing this, we can rest in God’s sovereign goodness and are drawn into a deeper relationship with Him.

When the Lord finally gives her a son, Hannah’s mindset about prayer remains the same. She felt hopeless and prayed from a place of sorrow, but now she is overcome with joy and prays from a place of gratitude. Although her circumstances transform, her dependence on God does not change. 1 Samuel 1:27-28 states:

“'I prayed for this boy and since the Lord gave me what I asked him for, I now give the boy to the Lord. For as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.' Then he worshipped the Lord there."

Not only does Hannah continue to praise the Lord, but she gives her son up to the Lord’s temple in an act of complete surrender. In an extraordinary act of faith, Hannah willingly gives up the blessing she prayed so long to receive.

Ultimately, the story of Hannah teaches us to remain consistent in prayer and worship no matter the circumstances. Through both joy and despair, we must continue to talk to Him, knowing that He hears us and cares for us. When our hearts break and it feels as though the night will never end, we can pour out every fear and every hope to the Lord. And when the morning finally comes, we can lift our voices to the King who has been faithful through every season of our lives.
